Untrained driver overturns dumper!

A Company in Ascot has recently been fined £5000 with £1772 costs for contravening section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, as an untrained employee suffered from a bad foot injury. This happened when the demolition worker was trapped underneath a skip-loading dumper that he was driving when it overturned.

Safety alert issued; Skid Steer Loaders

the HSE has issued a safety alert after an operator was crushed by the lift arm of a skid-steer loader. The alert concerns the dangers that can result from defective interlocks which, when combined with unsafe operating practices, can potentially result in serious injury or even death to the operator.

The safety bulletin stresses the importance of reviewing and following manufacturers guidelines, having properly trained operators and the need to test, inspect and maintain interlocks.

Higher Penalties for Health and Safety Breaches

A new act has recently come into force which will see the penalties for imposed health and safety breaches rise. At the moment magistrates can impose a fine upto £20,000 for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and fines of up to £5,000 for breaches of many of the Health and Safety breaches.

Imprisonment is only available for a very limited number of offences, such as breaching improvement notices or prohibition notices.

Working Time Regulations - Update

From the 1st April 2009, The Working Time (Amendment) Reulations 2007 will increase the statutory minimum holiday entitlement to 28 days or 5.6 weeks.

Does this apply to your business?
Well it could do, if you currently give your employees 4 weeks plus Bank Holidays, then you don't have to do anything. The 5.6 days or 28 days takes into account the eight bank holidays. If you don't, then make sure you do from April 2009 and remember to let your employees know by issuing a new employment contrac...
